Self-Defense

Jiu Jitsu is designed to help a person defend themselves against a larger attacker. Our classes give our students the ability to physically defend themselves, using takedowns and body position on the ground to safely subdue an aggressor, all while getting a great workout.

Chris Matakas
Founder and Head Instructor

Chris Matakas received his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt from 4th degree black belt Ricardo Almeida in 2015. Professor Chris was the Head Instructor of Ricardo Almeida Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Newtown, Pa for four years before branching out and bringing world-class Jiu Jitsu to the Burlington Township area.

Though successful in Jiu Jitsu competition and undefeated in Amateur MMA, Chris's main focus is using Jiu Jitsu as a tool for personal development for his students. He has published four books regarding using Jiu Jitsu to train our mind and body to become better versions of ourselves.

Mike Shea
Instructor

At the conclusion of his wrestling career in 2006, Mike began training jiu-jitsu at various academies throughout Pennsylvania. During this period, he completed a short stint in amateur MMA compiling an undefeated record. In 2009, he moved back to New Jersey and joined Professor Ricardo Almeida’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Throughout his career he has competed in various Jiu-jitsu competitions ranging from the IBJJF world championships to military combative tournaments. In 2017, he joined Professor Chris Matakas, in support of his vision to bring world-class jiu-jitsu to the Burlington Township area.

Mike currently serves as a pilot in the United States military. Although his military service has required him to take the occasional hiatus from the gentle art, it has also afforded him the opportunity to grow, train, and share experiences with various academies and clubs across the globe. Mike is committed to developing leadership, confidence, and purpose throughout his community.
